The God of Vengeance is a three-act play written by Sholem Asch in 1918. The story takes place in a Jewish brothel in early 20th century Poland and revolves around the relationship between the brothel owner, Yekel, and his daughter, Rifkele. Yekel hopes to marry Rifkele off to a respectable man, but Rifkele falls in love with one of the prostitutes, Manke. As their relationship develops, Yekel's business and reputation are put at risk, leading him to take drastic measures to protect his family's honor. The play explores themes of love, morality, and the clash between traditional Jewish values and modernity. It was controversial at the time of its publication due to its frank portrayal of sexuality and the depiction of Jewish characters in a less than flattering light.
