These hikes carried me up smoking craters, through chestnut forests, along abandoned terraces, and down to coves where the sea is a mirror of molten blue. I walked trails where autumn felt like spring, where a shaded ravine held winter's chill even as ridges baked like midsummer. The Aeolian Islands revealed themselves as a patchwork of microclimates, moods, and stories. Each trail became both a physical ascent and a lesson in adaptation: water always scarce, winds unpredictable, paths shifting with eruption and erosion.
Along the way, I encountered shepherds, fishermen, widows tending caper bushes, children racing scooters through alleys, and strangers who shared bread and Malvasia wine at summits. Their voices, gestures, and silences shaped my steps as much as the trails themselves.
