The Brothers Grimm, Jacob as well as Wilhelm Grimm, released a selection of German fairy tale Stories titled Household Stories by the Grimm in 1812. Kinder- und Hausm''rchen (Childhood and Household Tales) is the original German title. The collection has acquired worldwide fame and also includes popular tales as Cinderella, The Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, Rhapunzel, Snow White and Rumpelstilt kin.
These tales had been compiled by the Grimm Brothers who were academics, philologists as well as cultural researchers involved in a bigger project aiming at protecting as well as determining the cultural heritage of the German-speaking areas. They gathered stories from different oral and written sources, aiming to capture them in a form close to their folk roots.
The tales in Household Stories vary considerably; Some are moralistic and light while others are dark and have themes unsuitable for kids today. These stories have had several adaptations over time, sometimes softening the darker aspects to make them much more attractive to a contemporary young audience.
The Grimm Brothers' work has broader importance than merely entertainment.
