Attraverso l'analisi dei testi di Nag Hammadi, del Vangelo di Tommaso, di Maria e di Giuda, della Pistis Sophia e delle polemiche patristiche, emerge un Cristo diverso da quello canonico: non un redentore che muore per i peccati del mondo, ma un maestro che indica la via per spezzare le catene dell'illusione e ricongiungersi al Pleroma. Un Gesù che ride sulla croce, che trasmette insegnamenti segreti e che si scontra con i suoi stessi discepoli quando non comprendono il suo messaggio.
Oltre alla sua dimensione storica e filosofica, il volume esplora la fortuna del Cristo gnostico nella mistica medievale, nelle correnti esoteriche moderne e nel pensiero contemporaneo.
