This is the only practical, currently in-print phrasebook dedicated to the Sgaw dialect of Karen (S'gaw Karen). Written by T. F. Rhoden after a year of intensive language study on a Boren Fellowship along the Thailand-Myanmar border, it fills a real gap: almost every other Karen language resource is either long out of print, missionary-era, or purely academic.
The book is deliberately focused and immediately useful. Nine clear chapters cover the situations travelers, researchers, volunteers, and new friends actually encounter:

Every entry presents the Karen script, a carefully considered Romanization (the author is open about its limitations and urges learners to discard it as soon as possible), and natural English glosses. Special attention is given to the guttural sounds, glottal stops, and the fluid, village-level variation in tones that make Sgaw Karen both challenging and rewarding to learn.
What sets this phrasebook apart is the intellectual honesty of the introduction. Dr. Rhoden does not pretend Karen is a major language of commerce or diplomacy. He argues instead that the real reason to study it is the privilege of spending time with an extraordinarily generous speech community whose political history has left distinctive fingerprints on everyday vocabulary. The result is a tool that is practical for the road and quietly thought-provoking for anyone interested in language, ethnicity, and the state.
