Newly widowed, author Cathay Reta was in her mid-60s and looking for direction for her life. She traveled alone to Spain and started walking. She kept walking day after day through tears, anger, laughter, sadness, and loneliness. Every day was a challenge, and she often questioned why she was on the Camino. Why not just go to a nice hotel, drink sangria, and think through what to do the next thirty years?
Cathay learned that the physical struggle of the Camino brings out an inner breaking of the heart and soul. It gives depth and tangibility to what's felt inside; it makes a way for healing. After 37 days she reached her destination no longer feeling lost or broken. On the Camino she fell in love with herself again: that adventurous, hopeful soul she had slowly dismantled and buried years ago. She learned that hardship is not necessarily a bad thing; sometimes it's the most direct path to self-discovery and renewal.
