The Marginated Tortoise (Testudo marginata) is the largest species of tortoise native to Europe. It is well-known for its distinctive appearance, characterized by a flared, saw-toothed edge on its carapace, which gives it a skirted look. This unique feature becomes more pronounced as the tortoise matures, distinguishing it from other species in the Testudo genus.
Adult Marginated Tortoises typically reach lengths of 30 to 35 cm (12 to 14 inches) and weigh between 2 to 5 kilograms (4 to 11 pounds), with males generally being larger than females. Their carapace is black or dark brown with yellowish highlights, while the plastron (the underside) is usually pale yellow with dark blotches. These color patterns provide excellent camouflage in their native environments.
Marginated Tortoises are herbivores with a diet primarily consisting of grasses, flowers, and leafy greens. Known for their gentle and docile temperament, they are an appealing choice for pet owners who are willing to provide proper care.

They are listed under Appendix II of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) and are protected by various conservation laws within their native range.
