Les arts et les sciences ont le même but: comprendre et représenter le monde, intérieur ou extérieur. Pourtant, leurs démarches diffèrent: les sciences recherchent une vision universelle, tandis que les arts expriment une vision personnelle reconnue par un public. Leurs relations changent avec le temps et selon les contextes. Depuis la préhistoire, musique, peinture et sculpture accompagnent les progrès techniques des chasseurs-cueilleurs. Avec l'agriculture et l'élevage, l'architecture s'associe à la géométrie et à la mécanique, et la décoration à la physique des solides.
