The farrier from 1903 lost his world because he thought the automobile was a fad. Today, that obsolete thinking is called Farrier's Bias, and the new target is you: the highly skilled professional.
Many feel it already. That quiet fear that your value is diminishing. This anxiety is not random; it is the predictable consequence of change. Change is a constant but this time the impact will also change the way in which many of us will work.
How best do I describe what is about to happen?
This is a strange analogy but bear with me. Part One. The OutingDonna is on a boat. It's a nice day, and all is perfect in the world. The sun is shining; the water is still. She is about to drop into the water with her husband to have a swim. Just then, a whale comes out of the water directly behind the boat. Donna's eyes widen in horror. She thinks, 'That's not a big whale. It's a f*cken massive whale.' Then, boom, it breaches, landing directly onto the boat. Donna and her husband are thrown into the air. He falls into the whale's mouth, and Donna impales herself on the remnants of the mast. They both die. The end. Part Two. From the Whale's Perspective
Hi, I'm a whale, my name's Larry, and I'm having a bit of a wander 100 meters down (109 yards, you're welcome). I'm minding my own business and decide to swim up to the surface to have a looksie. I'm a massive f*cken whale, so I'm not in a hurry. I slowly come out of the water. 'Nice day, ' I think. I go to casually drop back in the water, but some dick has parked his boat behind me. Boom. I go to yell, 'F#ck!' when something lodges in my throat, and I end up choking to death. The end. Right. Who was at fault? Can't blame Larry. he was moving slowly, just minding his own business. Can't blame Donna, she was just a passenger. She had no idea Larry was in the area. So, was it her husband's fault? For whatever reason, lots of people are going to get a shock when the full weight of AI comes crashing down on them. 'Larry' is the slow-moving approach of AI. 'Donna' is an example of how people will act when the enormity of its impact is revealed. Now, be you a new age luddite. 'I don't know what I'm mad at coz I don't understand technology. But I'm furious.' or, you're a knowing objector. 'I know where this is all going. But I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope I don't get affected.' The reaction is understandable. The part that we really need to unpack is why is everyone so quiet. Am I missing something? My absolute belief is that Larry will indeed freak out the masses. But I also want to say that AI, when understood, and used correctly is a game changer. So, don't fear the whale. Just find a better place to park your boat. The Last farrier is sometimes light hearted, often concerning and, compelling if your searching for a solution to something you know is about to occur. By the way. It was Larry's fault. He and his wife Sheryl had an argument. Larry got angry and, because he's an dick he went looking for trouble. Don't be Larry!
