El libro comienza con la infancia de Pol Pot en la Camboya rural y sigue su ascenso al poder como lÃder del Partido Comunista de Kampuchea (CPK). Estas polÃticas acabaron creando un entorno en el que entre un cuarto y dos tercios de la población del paÃs fue asesinada durante un periodo de tres años, entre 1975 y 1978.
Este libro describe sus principios rectores para el CPK y sus efectos devastadores: la colectivización de la tierra, la ejecución de quienes eran percibidos como enemigos de clase, la reubicación de comunidades y la aplicación de reformas laborales, entre otras polÃticas que marginaron o directamente destruyeron a ciertas poblaciones camboyanas, como las comunidades étnicas vietnamita y cham.
