Hubo un tiempo en que el pueblo tenÃa voz. Una voz ronca, cansada, pero llena de fe. Era la voz de los que nunca tuvieron nada, de los que aprendieron a vivir con poco y a soñar con mucho. Esa voz no venÃa de los palacios ni de las universidades, sino de los mercados, de las fábricas, de los barrios donde la vida se gana dÃa a dÃa entre la miseria y la esperanza. Era una voz que temblaba, sÃ, pero que también sabÃa cantar. Una voz que se alzaba con rabia y ternura, con hambre y con dignidad, con la certeza de que otro mundo era posible.
Durante décadas, esa voz fue el pulso de América Latina. Llenaba las plazas, los estadios, las avenidas; se mezclaba con el olor del sudor y del maÃz, con las manos levantadas y los ojos húmedos de quienes creÃan que la historia, por fin, les pertenecÃa. DecÃa palabras grandes, palabras que encendÃan los cuerpos: dignidad, justicia, revolución. Palabras que eran promesa y consuelo, bandera y canción. Los pobres hablaban de futuro como quien habla de un hijo que aún no ha nacido pero ya ama.
Pero las palabras, cuando se repiten demasiado, se desgastan. Se convierten en ruido, en consigna, en eco hueco. Lo que alguna vez fue fuego se volvió retórica; lo que fue esperanza, administración; lo que fue rebeldÃa, rutina. Y el pueblo, que habÃa aprendido a creer, un dÃa empezó a dudar. La fe comenzó a resquebrajarse, no de golpe, sino lentamente, como una pared que se cuartea sin que nadie lo note hasta que cae el primer ladrillo.
Este libro nació de esa grieta. De esa duda que ya no se calla. De un murmullo que empezó a recorrer los cerros de Caracas, los pasajes de Santiago, los barrios del Conurbano bonaerense, las calles empolvadas de Managua. Era un murmullo que venÃa desde abajo, desde donde siempre vienen las verdades más incómodas. No era un grito de odio, sino de desilusión. Un susurro cargado de tristeza y de lucidez, un reclamo sin micrófono, un lamento que también era una advertencia.
Nosotros no somos traidores -decÃa esa voz-. Fueron ellos los que se olvidaron de nosotros.
Y en esas palabras estaba contenida toda una historia de amor y ruptura: el amor por un proyecto que prometió redención y terminó pareciéndose demasiado a aquello que juraba combatir; la ruptura de quienes comprendieron que el poder popular, una vez conquistado, dejó de ser popular. En ese murmullo cabÃa el cansancio de los que dieron todo -su tiempo, su esperanza, su juventud- para descubrir que la revolución se disfraza de burocracia.
Los hijos del desencanto son esos hombres y mujeres que crecieron creyendo que la historia estaba de su lado, y hoy sienten que la historia los ha dejado atrás. No reniegan de la justicia ni del sueño, pero ya no confÃan en quienes lo administran. Son los herederos de una utopÃa ajada, los que aún recuerdan el sabor del ideal, pero ya no se alimentan de promesas. Y desde su silencio, desde sus barrios olvidados, vuelven a murmurar lo que la polÃtica no quiere escuchar: que la esperanza también se puede cansar.
