Many books have been written about Lean, how all the tools and methods should be used, and what all the Japanese words mean. They dive deeply into advanced theories and academic definitions. By contrast, OKTAV is a book about how we become Lean, and what steps we must take. It deals with how we build a Lean culture and mobilize our organization, to start our own Lean journey with all employees involved in practice.
OKTAV describes a Lean transformation as a process, where we proceed step by step through the first unknown terrain we go. It explains how we can establish strategic management using simple means, and how we can practice systematic scientific improvement work in daily life, instead of brainstorming random ideas and focusing on large numbers of useless measures. OKTAV is the red thread to follow to build a culture of improvement with respect for people.
We find that although many people work with Lean and try different models and concepts, there are many pitfalls. It is important to think about the respect for people principle in practice, and ensure that we do not compromise on this in the initiatives we implement; that we focus on the expectations of the customer instead of our own professional preferences; and that we respect the competence and experience of the employees, rather than believing that as a manager we always know best, based on our academic knowledge and certificates. OKTAV emphasizes the importance of listening and supporting, instead of commanding and controlling; it keeps the focus on achieving goals, instead of controlling activities that are carried out.
