This research explored the chemical environment of titanium (Ti) in low-silica calcium aluminosilicate glasses (LSCAS) doped with TiO2. Using X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy, the oxidation states and coordination symmetry of titanium were determined. The results indicated that the local structure of Ti in the LSCAS glasses resembles the rutile phase of standard TiO2. Increasing the concentration of TiO2 did not significantly affect the positions of the pre-edge absorption peaks, although the heights of the peaks in the glasses were higher than in the standards, suggesting a distortion in the octahedral geometry. The energy of the absorption edge suggests the coexistence of Ti(+3) and Ti(+4) in the glass samples. In addition, it was found that the vacuum melting method used favored the formation of Ti3+.
