This study was designed to determine the influence of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection on the natural history of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in children. Serum antibody patterns against EBV and the clinical and laboratory status of 64 children with HIV infection in 1997 were monitored at a hospital in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. This study showed a high prevalence of antibodies against EBV and that lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia was more frequent in children exposed to EBV.
