She is not the first to fight it. An old conductor remembers what the last reopening cost and knows the only defense that has ever worked. A violinist with steady hands stays close, even as the hum starts to answer in his own chest. A caretaker keeps the building's secrets and his own. And a rival who wants the spotlight more than he fears the dark is happy to hand the theater anything it asks for, as long as the lights stay on him.
The marks get worse. The hum learns to harmonize. Somewhere beneath the boards a count begins, one slow beat at a time, keeping her place until she comes back, and the closer the reopening gala creeps, the more the line between her voice and the building's grows thin enough to step through.
To live through the season, Celeste will have to do the one thing a great singer is trained never to do. Sing it wrong. Break every cadence. Refuse every resolution. She must turn her craft inside out while the building learns her note by note, the fog seals the town shut, and the people she trusts begin to hum in their sleep.
