Vienna remembers in three-quarter time. In 1883, the glittering Hoflich Ballroom burned after a new waltz turned elegance into compulsion and the night ended in white fire. The city buried the scandal, mourned its dead, and eventually rebuilt the hall over the same wound. Twenty-five years later, society returns dressed for triumph, convinced memory can be managed by architecture, money, and electric light.
Journalist Karl Mueller comes to the reopening for a feature. Cellist Greta Schmidt comes to play. Countess Amalia von Straub comes because surviving the first catastrophe has made her a symbol the city wants to display. Then the conductor's score begins writing itself, the orchestra starts playing a forbidden waltz called Die Letzte Stunde, and the hall remembers exactly what it was built to do.
The dance floor becomes a machine. Mirrors run ahead of reality. Guests lose control of their own bodies. And one by one, dancers do not burn, bleed, or fall. They are simply erased in the middle of a turn. As panic spreads and the city reaches for official explanations, Karl, Greta, and the few people willing to face the impossible are forced to uncover the truth beneath the hall: a composer's grief did not die in 1883. It fused with music, memory, and architecture, and it has been waiting for another audience ever since.
The Waltz of the Hollow Hall is gothic horror about ritualized grief, haunted performance, and the terror of discovering that some songs do not end. They only wait for a room willing to remember them.
