许良英，科学史家，中国科学院自然科学史研究所研究员，爱因斯坦研究专家，民主思想家、社会活动家。李慎之，原中国社会科学院副院长、美国研究所创所所长，被誉为20世纪中国自由主义的领军人物。两位先生先后被打为右派，经过自我启蒙，又先后成为坚定的自由主义者。
1998年2月，李慎之写信请许良英对自己的一篇文章作出评论，许良英很快作了回复。两位尚未谋面的老人由此开启了五年的通信，展开对中国前途的深刻对话，直到2003年3月因李的猝然离世而中断。
两位老人在通信中分享了各自与过去决裂、成为民主自由的倡导者的心路历程，坚定地认为，只有通过再启蒙，尤其是知识分子的自我启蒙，中国才能实现真正的民主与现代化。从真理是否价值中立、李约瑟问题、陈独秀、哈维尔、顾准，到民主的本义与条件、中国的专制传统、知识分子角色、科学精神与民主自由的关系、现代化、全球化，他们几乎不设防线，也坦率地分享了对于极端民族主义与新左派思想的批判。他们的思考，在今天看来依然切中肯綮，常常发人深省。
本书不仅是对20世纪末中国知识分子心路历程的记录，也是一份关于社会变革和文化反思的珍贵遗产。徐友渔、傅国涌、李大同三位学者分别作序，从不同角度解读这批通信的思想价值。
