Vin Dante used to believe the truth could still move people. He was a journalist once, back when that word carried weight. Then he chased the wrong story, burned the wrong source, and watched a man named Marcus Keller vanish because Vin wanted a byline more than Marcus needed to stay hidden. The guilt never left. Neither did the story.
When the hacker who still trusted him, Bea Mokoena, disappears into the machine, Vin follows her the only way left open. He lets the system pull him under. He crosses into the Infernet, the buried place where the network keeps the people it has finished using.
A dead program called Virgil.exe is waiting for him there. It offers to guide him down, circle by circle, through nine descending levels of a hell the platform age built by hand. Each circle punishes a sin the feed perfected and then sold back to us as a feature. Apathy. Obsession. Deceit. Exploitation. Rage. Identity. Betrayal. Innovation. Oblivion.
In one circle, commenters are sewn to the words they once typed, their jaws cracking wider with every reply that lands. In another, workers are optimized by the machines they built, sanded down to pure function until nothing human is left to improve. A street protest is harvested for the rage it produces and metered out like electricity. A face is branded, burned, and filed. Deeper still, a bright new product waits under a single spotlight, and it wants Vin's voice, his name, his face on the launch screen. It promises to make him louder than every lie ever told about him. All he has to do is say yes.
Because in the Infernet, no one is ever taken by force. Everyone agrees first. That is the real horror of the place. The system does not steal you. It gets you to sign, smiling and grateful, certain the whole thing was your own idea.
Virgil.exe has walked this descent before. It knows every circle, every offer, every soft voice that waits in the dark to tell Vin he has suffered enough and can stop now. What it cannot promise is that the man who reaches the final door will still be the man who started down. The Infernet changes what it touches. It edits. It revises. By the time Vin understands the true cost of the descent, he is already too far down to climb back out unmarked.
To reach Bea, Vin has to walk the entire descent and hold on to the one thing the network cannot copy or overwrite: the memory of who he was before it owned him. He carries names. He carries a ledger of every person the feed tried to delete. And somewhere in the dark he learns that a name written down and spoken aloud is the last weapon that still cuts in a world engineered to forget.
DIGITAL INFERNO is a cyberpunk horror descent for readers who like their dread with teeth. It reads like Dante dragged through a surveillance state: part body horror, part techno-nightmare, part unflinching look at what it costs to stay a person when the whole world would rather you were quiet, ranked, and content.
