Elara Voss helped build that machine. She is a Council engineer with a Helix-made arm and an implant that lets her hear what the cores contain, and for years she trusted the system that made her. Then the numbers stop behaving. The readings no longer match the story she was trained to believe. The cores are not tools. They are rooms, and the voices sealed inside them are still awake, still afraid, still asking to come home. One of those voices belongs to the mentor she watched die.
What she uncovers drives her out of the clean air and down into the undercity, into the Ghost Network, a resistance built from the people the city was already preparing to erase. They fight with jammers and salvaged tech and the kind of trust that only survives underground. To prove what the cores truly are, Elara has to slip back inside Helix, cut a signal at its source, and face a man who has learned to speak with the machine's own voice. He calls himself a guide. The city calls him the Oracle. Elara knows him for what he is, and she knows the Council is not slowing the Singularity down. It is racing to finish it.
Every hour, the sorting moves faster. It decides who counts as a person and who becomes a spare part in someone else's forever. It reaches down into the undercity, tags the useful and the unwilling, and calls the theft an act of mercy. The higher tiers are told they are being kept safe. No one tells them the price, or who pays it.
The voice Elara trusted most is already inside the lattice. Simeon trained her, believed in her, and died with an abort locked out of reach. Now he speaks to her from the machine, and she cannot tell how much of him is still him. Freeing the trapped minds could loose them into a city that was never built to hold them. Leaving them there means agreeing, one more time, that some people are easier to file away than to save.
This is a story about memory and consciousness, about grief that will not stay buried, and about the quiet violence of a system that saves a chosen few and spends the rest. Elara knows the machine from the inside. She helped make it run. Now she has to decide what she is willing to burn down to stop it, and how much of herself she can lose and still call the result a rescue.
