This book is an introduction to the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness for the patient. The purpose of this book is to give the patient the tools to take full advantage of psychiatric diagnosis and treatment. The most important fact that the patient needs to understand is that the patient is in charge of the treatment. What the patient does has more to do with the success of the treatment than what the doctor does or what the medication does. The patient should know more about his treatment and his medications than the doctor. The doctor knows more about medicine and the practice of medicine than the patient. However, the patient need only study his mental illness and his medications while the doctor has to study all medications and all mental illnesses as well as the medical illnesses that patients bring into the doctor's office.
