The family caregiver is the main provider of care, mobilizer of actions and mediator of interpersonal relationships for the person with the stoma, whether in their own family or in agencies and services. This study aimed to understand the context of the family caregiver in the chronic stoma condition. The theoretical framework adopted was socioculture. The context of the study was a nursing clinic that cares for people with stomas, located in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso. Data collection took place between April 2012 and May 2013 and took place in two different stages with different strategies. The first involved community therapy circles, in which eight family members took part; the second involved six semi-structured interviews. The data was subjected to thematic analysis. Each stage identified a theme, the first of which was entitled The family caregiver in the context of the person with a stoma. In this stage, the family member cares in the home sphere, which relates to the domestic environment, family relationships and the demands of food, hygiene and comfort; and the public sphere, which refers to relationships in search of professional attention and social support.
