Profesorul Constantin Bogdan, cunoscut gerontolog şi geriatru şi autor a numeroase lucrări de specialitate, dar şi de eseuri culturale şi filozofice, ne oferă prin această carte un florilegiu intelectual care se constituie într-o cronică a unui umanist veritabil a cărui privire inventariază, cu afecţiune dublată de spirit critic, reperele culturale ale medicinii, oferindu-ne un inedit melanj între eseuri pline de farmec şi analize subtile ale celor mai importante tendinţe intelectuale ale momentului. Eseistica lui Constantin Bogdan se dezvoltă organic printr-o continuă desfăşurare de la cotidian la spiritual, printr-un permanent du-te-vino cultural ce se vrea ca o reflecţie antropologică esenţială. Îndrăzneala unor abordări ale unor situaţii limită existenţiale, îndrăzneala conceptuală ce însoţeşte aceste scrieri fac din doctorul Bogdan un avizat şi profund interpret al condiţiei umane.
Autorul ne plimbă atât în spaţiul intelectual, cât şi în timpul real, în diverse locuri semnificate cu diverse evenimente din prezentul imediat sau din trecut, dar ne oferă şi călătorii iniţiatice cu ţintă culturală precisă, sau întâlniri memorabile cu diverse personalităţi. Varietatea tematică şi rafinată a eseurilor sale se instrumentează adesea în studii ştiinţifice, prin exprimarea cumpănită a unor opinii remarcabile, a unor originale concepte iatrofilozofice. Dar şi timpul şi spaţiul biografic îşi găsesc aici expresia, după cum scrie autorul, urmărind periplul în lume a unor mari personalităţi culturale (Voltaire, Cehov, Van Gogh, Eminescu, Brâncuşi ş. a.).
Graţie acestui medic poţi veni în contact cu o lume deosebită, probabil unul dintre ultimele semne că mediciniştii cu spirit enciclopedic au fost cândva o realitate demnă de toată admiraţia intelectuală.
Ce mi se pare remarcabil la acest truditor într-ale gerontologiei, este că Domnia sa este exact acel gen de intelectual pentru care viaţa este un dar, iar atitudinea faţă de aceasta se exprimă într-un spirit enciclopedic al curiozităţii ştiinţifice, dar şi a iubirii faţă de aproape. De aici şi deschiderea rafinată a acestui opus eseistic... şi nu numai, şi în acelaşi timp o carte solidă, argumentată, de filozofie medicală şi de meditaţie asupra limitelor fiinţei umane, în fond, o muncă de recuperare a distincţiei intelectuale a unui medic împlinit, cum este doctorul Bogdan.
