Este libro está orientado a la escatologÃa y mesianismo judÃo. La idea de un salvador que el pueblo hebreo esperaba, y donde ha habido gran número de debates, en especial desde la aparición de la figura de Yeshua (Jesús), por ser los cristianos quienes mayormente declarasen que él era el mesÃas. Los judÃos no reconocieron a Yeshua como mesÃas porque no encaja con el perfil que esperan, y porque afirman que no cumplÃa con las caracterÃsticas profetizadas. Los judÃos religiosos temÃan que la proclamación de Yeshua como rey de los judÃos causase un conflicto con los romanos, pero eso igual ocurrió más tarde, cuando Shimon bar Koba fue nombrado el mesÃas por el SanedrÃn tres décadas después de la crucifixión de Yeshua.
Se debe definir qué es un mesÃas y qué papel desempeña. En la historia hebrea, su libertador fue Moisés, quien antes de su muerte proclamó que un libertador vendrÃa en su lugar, uno de sus propios hermanos israelitas. Ciertamente, ese salvador se vio en la figura de Josué (el sucesor de Moisés), pero se entendÃa que Moisés hablaba de alguien que vendrÃa en el futuro y serÃa el guÃa de todo el pueblo en un ámbito más universal.
El rey David dijo que vendrÃa un hijo suyo que serÃa el salvador (el mesÃas), la mano derecha de Jehovah. Inicialmente el concepto de hijo se interpretó literalmente, no como un futuro sucesor, de modo que su heredero, Salomón pensó que él era este mesÃas.
Los eruditos judÃos se han dedicado a buscar pistas sobre el tal MesÃas, quien además debe reestablecer Israel reuniendo a las tribus perdidas. Y esta búsqueda se hace en figuras públicas, en las Escrituras, incluso en sus códigos. Ellos revisan las previas opiniones de los midrashim del Talmud. Encuentran dos figuras importantes: el MesÃas mayor y el MesÃas menor. El menor es llamado 'MesÃas hijo de José', y el mayor es llamado 'MesÃas hijo de David'. Algunos han especulado que no son dos sino el mismo, representando dos caracterÃsticas del mismo ser.
Al final del Génesis el patriarca Jacob anunció que alguien grande vendrÃa como Enviado y PacÃfico, con quien desaparecerÃa el poder de la tribu de Judá y quien quitarÃa el poder de las 613 ordenanzas que impondrÃa Moisés. En las palabras de los profetas mayores y menores de Israel se mencionaba la llegada también de un predicador que unirÃa a las personas, que enseñarÃa amor, se preocuparÃa por los elementos indeseados de la sociedad y lograrÃa grandes cosas sin la necesidad de la fuerza.
Analizamos todas las referencias relativas a las caracterÃsticas para identificar a dicho mesÃas, desde el lugar, tiempo y condiciones que debÃan darse para su aparición, y cómo se desarrollarÃa dicha aparición, sus pautas y final, a la luz de la literatura hebrea, y tanto del canon de la Tanak como del Talmud y la Kabalah.
