Compromise and compliments became keys to our thriving marriage. Learning to appreciate the beauty of our differences and the value of working together helped us rule our family with confidence and joy.
One risks in marriage is allowing problems to overshadow love. Financial stress, external pressures, and unhealed wounds can dominate a relationship if couples do not actively choose to let love be the guiding force.
Kathleen and I made the conscious decision early on that our problems would never become our spouse's issue to carry alone. A healthy marriage does not place one person as the fixer while the other struggles in silence. Instead, partners work together, supporting each other without making problems the dominant focus of the relationship.
Choosing love over conflict means avoiding the eggshell environment, where tension silences communication. It means understanding whether the fight is truly worth the casualty, avoiding emotional bullying, and ensuring that disagreements do not spiral into unnecessary battles.
