Tạp A-hàm (Skt. Samyukta-āgama), truyền thống của phần lớn các học phái sơ kỳ Phật giáo, ngoại trừ Hữu bộ, liệt kê là bộ thứ ba trong bốn A-hàm, tương đương với Samyutta thuộc bộ thứ tư trong năm bộ Nikāya (Pāli), được biên tập trong đại hội kết tập lần thứ nhất.
Luật Ma-ha Tăng kỳ, thuộc Đại chúng bộ (Mahāsaṅgika), chép: Tôn giả A-nan tụng lại toàn bộ Pháp tạng như vậy. Những kinh có văn cú dài được tập hợp thành một bộ gọi là Trường A-hàm. Văn cú vừa, tập hợp thành bộ Trung A-hàm. Văn cú tạp, tập hợp thành bộ Tạp A-hàm. Các thể tài như Căn tạp, Lực tạp, Giác tạp, Đạo tạp, vân vân, được gọi là tạp.
Các bộ Luật khác, chép về đại hội kết tập này, mà hầu hết Hán dịch đều gọi là 雜 tạp với giải thích gần tương tợ, nhưng không xác nghĩa. Từ tạp được giải thích như vậy không hoàn toàn có nghĩa pha tạp hay tạp loạn, nghĩa là pha trộn nhiều thứ linh tinh khác nhau vào một gói. Từ này được thấy xác định hơn theo giải thích của Tì-ni mẫu kinh: Trong đó, tương ưng (liên hệ) Tỳ-kheo, tương ưng Tỳ-kheo-ni, tương ưng Đế Thích, tương ưng chư Thiên, tương ưng Phạm Thiên; những kinh như vậy được tập hợp thành một bộ gọi là Tạp A-hàm. Nói là tương ưng Tỳ-kheo-ni, tương ưng Phạm Thiên, vân vân, cho thấy các tương đương của chúng trong Pāli: Bhikkhunī-samyutta, Brahma-samyutta. Tạp được giải thích như vậy hàm nghĩa tương ưng, chỉ rõ những kinh liên hệ đến Tỳ-kheo, Tỳ-kheo-ni, chư Thiên, vân vân được tập hợp thành một bộ. Nghĩa Tịnh và Huyền Trang đều hiểu theo nghĩa này, do đó dịch là Tương ưng A-cấp-ma. Từ Sanskrit saṃyukta, nguyên là phân từ quá khứ thụ động bởi động từ căn sam-YUJ, có nghĩa là kết hợp, nối kết hai cái lại với nhau như buộc hai con bò vào trong một cỗ xe kéo. Ý nghĩa nối kết hay tương ưng này được thấy rõ trong giải thích của Hữu bộ tì-nại-da tạp sự. Theo đó, những kinh có nội dung liên hệ (=tương ưng) đến năm uẩn, được tập hợp thành Phẩm Uẩn; những kinh có nội dung liên hệ đến xứ, giới, được tập hợp thành các phẩm Xứ và Giới.
