This book is the third and last volume of a book series that examines the hybridization of African Christianity not as a theological error alone, but as a structural phenomenon shaped by history, culture, power, fear, and unmet human needs.
Across the three volumes, the series traces how Christianity in many African contexts has fused with pre-Christian cosmologies, social hierarchies, survival anxieties, and charismatic authority structures. The result is not a simple blending of beliefs, but the emergence of hybrid systems where spiritual meaning, social control, emotional regulation, and institutional power become deeply entangled.
Across the three volumes, the series traces how Christianity in many African contexts has fused with pre-Christian cosmologies, social hierarchies, survival anxieties, and charismatic authority structures. The result is not a simple blending of beliefs, but the emergence of hybrid systems where spiritual meaning, social control, emotional regulation, and institutional power become deeply entangled.
Volume One focuses on origins. It explores how colonial disruption, indigenous cosmologies, economic precarity, and the search for spiritual agency created fertile ground for hybrid forms of Christianity. It examines how ideas of power, protection, blessing, and spiritual mediation were absorbed into Christian language, reshaping faith into a system designed as much for survival as for worship.
Volume Two moves from formation to function. It analyzes how these hybrid systems operate in practice-how authority concentrates, how fear circulates, how spiritual labor is extracted, and how psychological distress is spiritualized. This volume exposes the mechanisms by which belief becomes regulation, devotion becomes obligation, and spiritual leadership expands beyond care into control.
This Volume Three, where the series culminates, addresses consequences and responsibility. It interrogates what happens when power speaks in Jesus' name without ethical constraint. It examines the long-term effects on mental health, community trust, moral agency, and faith itself. Most critically, it separates God from the systems that claim Him, insisting that ethical accountability is not a threat to faith but its necessary condition.
