When the Kingdom of This World Becomes God's Throne examines a striking reversal in the global story of Christianity.
This book is the second volume in an ongoing inquiry into the transformation of Christianity as it has taken shape in Sub-Saharan Africa and, increasingly, beyond it. The first volume, The Hybrid Christian Spiritual Economy, examined how fear, need, power, and material exchange became embedded in certain expressions of African Christianity, especially within Nigeria.
This book is the second volume in an ongoing inquiry into the transformation of Christianity as it has taken shape in Sub-Saharan Africa and, increasingly, beyond it. The first volume, The Hybrid Christian Spiritual Economy, examined how fear, need, power, and material exchange became embedded in certain expressions of African Christianity, especially within Nigeria.
While Christianity is often described as an imported religion in Africa, a distinct hybridized form of African Christianity - shaped largely in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially Nigeria - is now being exported back to the rest of the world. It is spreading into regions long considered post-Christian, including parts of Europe and North America, where historic churches have become museums, warehouses, casinos, or cultural monuments rather than living centers of faith.
Into these spaces comes a different energy. A faith formed under pressure. A spirituality fluent in urgency, power, and visible results.
This book traces how Nigerian-led Christian movements, ministries, and media networks have reached nearly every country in the world, both physically and digitally. Through televangelism, livestreamed services, prophetic broadcasts, WhatsApp groups, YouTube channels, TikTok, Facebook, and algorithm-driven social platforms, African Christianity now circulates globally at unprecedented speed.
What is being exported is not only belief, but a worldview-one that blends Christian language with older cosmological assumptions about causality, protection, power, and spiritual intervention. The book shows how this hybrid spirituality thrives in environments of fear and instability, and how digital media has transformed it into a portable, scalable system.
At the same time, the book does not ignore the material realities of this expansion.
Global African Christianity now operates within vast spiritual economies, where preaching the gospel coexists with multiple streams of financial inflow: donations, offerings, gifts, seed-faith giving, prophetic services, branded content, conference circuits, and social-media monetization. Viewership becomes revenue. Engagement becomes capital. Influence converts into material support.
The scale is significant. Resources flowing through these transnational networks amount to hundreds of millions of dollars annually, and in some cases far more, reshaping not only religious life but media, migration patterns, and global perceptions of Christianity itself.
