Kai Yazzie has spent two hundred miles and the last of himself chasing a thing that wears a stolen face. It came out of the Arizona desert on the wrong kind of feet. It took his wife and his daughter, and it did not eat them. It arranged them in the snow like a message, proof that it could reach anything he loved, anytime it chose. Since that night he has followed it north through country that does not know its name, into the frozen dark at the top of the map, hunting the one creature the old teachings warned him never to hunt alone.
The trail ends deep in the Quebec bush, at a dying outpost called Black Spruce Station. A handful of strangers are holed up there against the winter, rationing their last fuel and their last nerve. A hard, clear-eyed medic named Mara. A frightened man with a shotgun and a guilty conscience. An old man who keeps to his cabin and knows far more than he says. Kai came here to finish a hunt. He arrives to find that something older got here first, and that it has been feeding on this ground for a very long time.
There are two predators in these woods now, and they do not share.
One is the Skinwalker he chased across a continent, a liar in borrowed skin that mimics the voices of the dead and knocks politely on locked doors, begging to be let in. It does not want to kill you so much as unmake you, one memory at a time. The other is a hunger that learned to walk, a starving thing born from an old winter and a broken taboo. It does not taunt. It does not bargain. It only takes, and it does not stop until there is nothing left to take.
When a whiteout seals the station shut, the two monsters begin circling the same shrinking prey. The last shelter is a ruin of blessed ground, a boundary held together by rules older than anyone alive, and those rules are the only thin thing standing between the survivors and the cold:
Do not answer the voices, even in your dead mother's mouth.
Do not open the door for anyone you did not watch walk up in daylight.
Do not spill blood in anger on holy ground.
Do not run. Running turns you into meat.
What the cold does not take, the voices will. Night after night the thing at the door wears the people they have lost and asks, softly, to be let inside. It knows their names. It knows their grief. It knows that the surest way through a locked door is to make a good person believe they are saving someone. The rules can keep a monster out of the church. Keeping it out of your own head is a different fight.
And the land itself is no ally. Up here the cold is its own kind of hunger, patient and total, and it has been swallowing men since long before either monster learned to walk. The snow keeps no record. The wind carries every scream away. Whatever happens at Black Spruce Station, the winter will bury it clean by morning and pretend nothing was ever there.
Break one rule and the boundary fails. To live through the night, Kai and Mara will have to break the hardest rule of all. They will have to stop running, walk back toward the place where the hunger was first born, and turn two apex predators against each other, with only a rifle, a strand of prayer beads, and a dead man's journal between them and the dark.
One of them wants your body. The other wants your name. Out here only one law keeps you breathing, and the cold enforces it. Do not answer what speaks to you from the snow.
BLOOD IN SNOW is a bleak, brutal folk-horror novel of survival, grief, and the patient, starving things that hunt the deep winter. It is graphic, physical, and unrelenting, the folklore is respected, and the ending gives no ground. For readers who take their horror cold, their monsters merciless, and their dread slow-built and earned, this is a long night in the north you do not walk out of unchanged.
