Introduced in 1996, the R170 brought the compact roadster into a new era. Its electrohydraulically operated Vario-Roof combined open-air driving with the security and practicality of a fixed-roof coupé. The model range developed from the original SLK200 and SLK230 Kompressor to the later SLK200 Kompressor, SLK320 and high-performance SLK32 AMG. The major model update of 2000 brought numerous technical and stylistic improvements.
