Introduced in 2004, the second-generation SLK brought a more dynamic and sophisticated character to the compact roadster. Its styling reflected influences from Formula One and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, while its retractable Vario-Roof combined open-air driving with the security and practicality of a fixed-roof coupé.
The model range extended from the supercharged four-cylinder SLK200 Kompressor through the SLK280, later renamed SLK300, and SLK350 to the V8-powered SLK55 AMG. The exceptionally rare SLK55 AMG Black Series represented the most uncompromising development of the R171. The extensive 2008 model update introduced numerous technical and stylistic improvements.
