At the map's unruly bottom gleams a feather-wreathed skull and the name Captain Laureline Brightwing, a pirate-teacher said to rob the greedy and leave books behind. Mango sap perfumes the map. Polly taps the feathered wreath; an inner compass clicks true. I'm going, she says. Parrots seldom ask permission.

Mira ties the scraps with ribbon and answers, It will have wings-but we'll need a crew. They post a notice: Seeking truth-seekers and tide readers. Pay uncertain. Stories abundant. By dusk a family forms: Jonah, a carpenter who treats timber like kin; Auntie Sal, a cook whose bread can quiet a riot; Finn, fluent in seven dialects of gull; and Old Latch, expert at everything he refuses to list.

They launch aboard Starling, a compact brig with a bow eager to argue with waves. Master Hobb stays ashore, presses a mended sextant into Mira's hand, and offers a charge: Steal no childhoods. Bring back what makes the world larger. Beyond the jetty, the stitched chart reads like riddle and invitation alike: Sail by listening. Measure clouds. Count the names you know for home. With charts unrolled and hopes trimmed to the wind, Polly climbs the rigging and flings their vow into the salt air. Starling answers with a pleased, forward-leaning hush tonight: We hunt. We learn. We come back together.
