Breviario del Nuevo Mundo es una antologÃa de Alejandro de Humboldt. En ella recogemos los textos que escribió durante su viaje, acompañado del naturalista francés Aimé Jacques Alexandre Bonpland, entre 1799 y 1804.
A pesar de ser el primer geógrafo e historiador de la América española, el barón alemán no tenÃa entre sus objetivos recorrer la América equinoccial. Tampoco planeó visitar el virreinato de la Nueva Granada que, sin embargo, lo deslumbró.
El propósito de visitar Latinoamérica y la escritura de este Breviario del Nuevo Mundo, surge cuando fracasa su idea de explorar el continente africano. En 1799 se dirige a España con el fin de solicitar los permisos necesarios para llegar a América.
Durante todo el viaje por el Nuevo Continente, Bonpland y Humboldt recolectaron numerosas plantas y estudiaron más de un millar de especies. Humboldt también se interesó en la distribución geográfica y altitudinal de las plantas. Levantó perfiles de mapas sobre la distribución de diversas asociaciones vegetales y recogió estos datos en este Breviario del Nuevo Mundo.
En sus viajes descubrió el principio ecológico de la relación entre la latitud y la altitud. Humboldt descubrió que subir una montaña en el trópico es análogo a viajar desde el Ecuador hacia el norte o hacia el sur. Siendo demostrable, en términos de clima y vegetación.
