The umma is experiencing trauma. For it drifted from revelation to tradition. Present-day Islam is a product of tradition. There were changes. Rather than mend their ways by conforming to the teaching of revelation, bellicose rulers engaged in efforts to reinterpret revelation to justify aggression. Efforts at expansion were justified by recourse to the teaching of the war between the dar al-Islam and the dar-al harb. The expansionary agendas of hawkish rulers required a reinterpretation of revelation to justify wars of aggression. The justification of aggression entailed a reorientation from a revelation-centric paradigm to a tradition-centric paradigm. The reorientation was expedited through the politicization of knowledge. The justification of aggression was expedited by the weaponization of exegesis and jurisprudence to further the aspirations of hawkish rulers. This transpired in stages. It altered the umma's trajectory. Allah says that He does not change the condition of people until they first change what is in themselves. The condition of the umma changed. It used to be preeminent but at present it is fragmented and in disarray. This indicates that the umma changed something in itself. There was a reorientation from ethics to rituals. The umma exchanged the Book of Allah to follow books of traditions. This brought painful results. As a result of neglecting revelation to follow tradition, the umma became embroiled in wars, internal as well as external. Traditional pillars of Islam focus on rituals. But there are also pillars of ethics. These encompass tawhid, rationality, justice, liberty, and peace. The transition from Islam as a religion of reconciliation to Islam as a religion of war was assisted by encroached on all ethical teachings of Islam. Treating tradition as revelation encroaches on tawhid, challenging the pre-eminence of revelation. Treating tradition as revelation from God was assisted by the repression of reason. The repression of reason enabled unwarranted perceptions to taint the knowledge of revelation. The neglect of justice reflects the emergence of authoritarianism. The repression of reason was intellectual suicide. It was reflected in the prohibition of juristic reasoning and in the persecution of rationalists by Musa al-Hadi in the mihna, and afterward by Mutawakkil. The repression was justified by the perception that the use of reason to understand revelation is kufr. Reason was repressed. The repression of reason assisted in the repression of freedom. For the repression of reason entailed the rejection of causation. The rejection of causation enabled the emergence and proliferation of the teaching of predestination, which rejects the perception that we possess freedom, including freedom of the will. Free willers were persecuted in the seventh century while the rationalists were persecuted in the eighth century. Repression, whether of reason or freedom, is an expression of authoritarianism. Treating tradition as a judge of revelation required the relegation of revelation under the jurisdiction of tradition. This subordinated revelation to tradition. Tradition superseded revelation. The shutdown of the Muslim mind triggered political suicide. The treatment of jihad al-talab as a pillar of religion turned wars of aggression into a religious requirement. The abrogation of all verses of reconciliation was used to justify wars of aggression, the sixth phase in the six waves of the transformation Islam from a teaching of reconciliation into a teaching of war. Treating jihad al-talab as a sixth pillar of the religion and the entrenchment of authoritarianism required the abrogation of all verses of reconciliation, and their replacement by traditions justifying authoritarianism, for example the tradition on apostasy. The misrepresentation of revelation due to the weaponization of the epistemology of revelation brought harm to all aggrieved parties.
