Islam is an Abrahamic faith. Yet Islam is perceived as an violent faith by non-Muslims. Is there any basis in revelation for this perception? This perception resulted partly from the harshness of the penal laws, which prescribe severe punishments for adultery, blasphemy and apostasy, which not treated as capital crimes by Allah. Jurists acted as lawgivers, which is the sole prerogative of Allah. The hubris of their assertions is breathtaking. For a jurist to act as lawgiver is an expression of shirk. As a result of the corruption of the sharia, Muslims experience differences not just with non-Muslims, but also with other Muslims. Islam is blamed for terrorism. Terrorists that present themselves as Muslims expose all law-abiding Muslims to the risk of retaliation. Terrorists require being restrained first and foremost by Muslims. Alternatively, non-Muslims could step up to the challenge. A few wayward preachers treat terror as martyrdom operations. This requires attention. To say that jurisprudence requires reform is an understatement. Jurisprudence requires restructuring and a return to the revealed roots of Islamic law, away from traditions and the rulings of wayward preachers. For under the influence of politics, the sharia was unmoored from its revealed foundations. These were replaced by traditions in an epic corruption of jurisprudence, a manifestation of juristic shirk. For the traditions ascribed to the prophet were recorded in defiance of his prohibition of recording his traditions. The trials of Muslims are the result of a poor knowledge of revelation, corrupted by traditions. The umma exchanged the Book of Allah for books of traditions, in the expectation that tradition guides better than revelation. This was an error. Traditional ulama concocted traditional Islam, while politicized ulama fabricated political Islam, the greatest threat to peace since Nazism. Traditional exegesis requires judging revelation in the light of tradition. Islamism endeavors to establish a global caliphate by preaching or, if necessary, through fighting. Traditional Islam is a product of a traditional methodology. This subordinates the Book of Allah to the judgements of persons. It treats persons as judges of revelation. This is an expression of shirk. Political Islam is also a result of weaponized exegesis. This approach teaches that all verses of reconciliation were abrogated by the verse of the sword (9:5). But according to revelation the words of Allah never change. The teaching of abrogation accordingly rests upon an assumption that contradicts the teaching of revelation. Rulers asked the ulama to record traditions, in defiance of the prohibition of adding to revelation by Allah (69:44-46). Rulers engaged willing ulama to interpret the Book of Allah to render unlawful wars lawful. Bellicose ulama reinvented Islam as a blueprint for waging wars of aggression to spread Islam by jihad al-talab and territorial expansion. These wars are allegedly waged in the endless clash between the dar al-Islam, the realm of Islam and the dar al-kufr, the realm of disbelief. But Islam is a religion of reconciliation, not a religion of aggression. The reinterpretation of Islam as a religion of war, as Abu Bakar al-Bagdadi put it, was buttressed by hawkish traditions. These treat authoritarianism as a Islamic. Muslims are expected to submit without question even to unjust rulers. Replacing revealed rulings with rulings from traditions required treating tradition as revelation. This enabled tradition to judge revelation and become a second root of legislation. But the designation of tradition as revelation in the sense of tanzil entails a fall into shirk. For Allah alone possesses the exclusive right to legislate in religion. Religious rulings require being rooted in revelation understood as tanzil, what Allah sent down. This is found in verses 44, 45 and 47 of chapter 5 of the Book of Allah.
