The umma is experiencing trials because, under the influence of politics, it became estranged from its guidance, the Book of Allah. This is hardly a unique experience. The umma replaced the Book of Allah with books traditions, as if persons guide better than Allah. That was a faux pas. The umma traded a revelation-centric paradigm for a tradition-centric paradigm. It became bewildered. Turning from revelation with tradition plunged the umma into backwardness. Allah said He does not alter the position of people until they first alter what is in themselves. The umma used to follow the Book of Allah, but at present it follows the sunna. But the prophet followed the Book of Allah, not traditions, recorded in defiance of his prohibition of recording his traditions. The estrangement is reflected in the practice of the recitation of the Book of Allah with minimal understanding. The umma's estrangement from its way of life was triggered by a reinterpretation of revelation, endeavouring to justify aggression to enlarge the empire. It was triggered by a reinterpretation of the teaching of reconciliation as a teaching of war. Wars of aggression, that entail the perpetration of war crimes, would be waged under the auspices of Islam under the pretext of propagating religion by jihad al talab, the sixth pillar of Islam. The reluctance to engage reason resulted in a corruption of knowledge. The reticence to engage reason was intellectual suicide which engendered a tradition of intellectual retardation. The mis-rendition of revelation, triggered by the requirement to justify unlawful wars of aggression, was assisted by the repression of reason. The war on rationality was justified by a tradition that equates using reason to understand revelation with kufr. The war against reason was a defiance of the teaching of revelation. For the Book of Allah encourages the use of reason. The turn from revelation to tradition was reflected in, and reinforced by the recording of traditions. The turn from revelation to traditions was justified by the perception that revelation requires clarification and detailing from tradition. The turn was also justified by the assertion that tradition, too, is revelation. The clarification and detailing of revelation by tradition subordinated revelation to tradition. Treating tradition as revelation enabled traditions to become a part of revelation from God. Bellicose ulama rearticulated Islam by recourse to tradition and the abrogation of all verses of reconciliation. This produced traditional and political Islam, respectively. Treating tradition as revelation expedited the emergence of traditionalism. The abrogation of all verses of reconciliation enabled the emergence of Islamism. Reinventing Islam as a religion of war was a corruption of the teaching of revelation. Jihad al-talab against non-Muslims would be waged as a requirement of Islam in the epic struggle between the dar al-Islam and the dar al-kufr, the Islamist version of the conflict of civilizations thesis. By treating wars of aggression, prohibited in revelation, as a requirement of the faith, hawkish ulama set the umma on a warpath. They plunged the umma into endless wars of empire-building which it would not win in the long term. Fascism comes with a price - as the Nazis and their allies learned the hard way - and which, because of the corrupt teachings of Islamist ulama parts of the umma continue to pay. Unlawful wars of aggression triggered suffering not just for the victims of aggression, but for Muslims too, when aggrieved parties retaliated. Muslims suffered setbacks in France, in Baghdad by Mongols in 1258, at Vienna in 1529 and 1683, in Afghanistan, Iraq, and wherever aggression triggers retaliation. The politicization of the epistemology of revelation enabled presuppositions and practices contrary to the teaching of revelation to corrupt the knowledge of revelation. This requires attention.
