Von den Druiden-Ritualen der keltischen Frühzeit über die Wikinger, die Klöster plünderten und Dublin gründeten, die normannische Eroberung, die als Hilfe begann und in Versklavung endete, bis zu Cromwells berüchtigtem Zu Hölle oder Connaught folgt dieses Buch den Bruchlinien der irischen Geschichte. Die Gro e Hungersnot wird nicht als Naturkatastrophe behandelt, sondern als politisches Versagen: eine Million Tote, während Getreide weiterhin exportiert wurde. Der Osteraufstand von 1916, der Nordirland-Konflikt und das Karfreitagsabkommen zeigen, wie lang der Weg zur Freiheit war und warum er noch nicht zu Ende ist. Auch unbequeme Fragen werden gestellt: kollaborierende Clanfürsten, die Rolle St. Patricks im Licht neuer archäologischer Funde und warum der Hass in Nordirland drei ig Jahre lang brannte.

Endlich verstehe ich, warum Irland bis heute kämpft. Die Analyse der Hungersnot als politisches Werkzeug hat mich am meisten beeindruckt. Auch die Passagen über die verbotene gälische Sprache unter englischer Herrschaft und die keltischen Wurzeln waren stark. Gut geschrieben und fair in der Darstellung, ohne die dunklen Kapitel
