Francisco combate en la guerra del corso; mientras, Felis, caballero de la Orden de Montesa sufre los horrores de martirio. Hay también una serie de amores cruzados, propios de la comedia de enredo y la novela bizantina, entre Leonardo y Marcela.
Esta obra mantiene el interés cervantino en narrar la experiencia dolorosa de la pérdida de libertad en un paÃs extranjero. Asimismo el anhelo de escapar y volver a la tierra natal es su tema de fondo.
