Prólogo a la edición española
Ha constituido para nosotros un honor traducir esta obra de Pierre Drieu La Rochelle. Su contenido hace gala al título, si bien hay que tener en cuenta que fue escrita en 1941 y que el siglo al que se refiere es, en realidad, la primera mitad del siglo XX. Y, además, el libro se escribió en un momento en el que todavía cabía ser optimista: la suerte de las armas seguía favoreciendo a las potencias del Eje y los tanques alemanes se situaban cerca de Stalingrado y a las puertas de Alejandría. Todo se torcería al año siguiente y Drieu no pudo superar la caída de lo que veía como el movimiento salvador de Europa.
Drieu, en tanto que literato, hace una génesis del siglo XX en función de la literatura francesa (él, un consumado crítico literario) y sitúa el punto en el que se inició la crisis en la irrupción del racionalismo. Considera el Renacimiento como una prolongación de la Edad Media y le niega ese carácter oscuro y sombrío que hoy se tiene tendencia a atribuir a aquel período. Cuando empieza, para él la edad oscura es a partir del advenimiento del racionalismo. En los dos siglos siguientes será hegemónico y precipitará las ideas de 1789. De las respuestas que se ensayaron para evitar la disolución de la forma de ser europea, el romanticismo fue el que embistió con más ímpetu, pero Drieu, acertadamente, dice que, carente de valores y mitos concretos, le falto el suelo bajo los pies. Prolonga la vigencia del romanticismo en los movimientos literarios franceses que se prolongaron a lo largo del siglo XIX.
Otro aspecto interesante de la obra es la contradicción que aparece en el último tercio entre el campo y la ciudad. Si hay decadencia en Occidente es porque las ciudades han crecido mucho y han roto los puntos de contacto con el campo. Eso ha hecho que el modelo ciudadano sea el del burgués medio, tripudo y barrigón, aficionado a la pesca de río, al té de las cinco y a la petanca. Es el tipo humano que odia Drieu. Y lo odio porque ese estilo de vida ha deformado su cuerpo. Solamente un campesino puede tener formas bellas en la medida en que el trabajo esculpe sus músculos. Drieu, a fin de cuentas, es un esteta que quiere ver y vivir la belleza del cuerpo humano.
Por eso, sabrá apreciar el renacimiento del culto a lo físico poco antes del inicio de la Primera Guerra Mundial. La gimnasia y el deporte, garantizarán la aparición de movimientos de reconstrucción que auguren un hombre nuevo. Eso es lo que ve en los fascismos y lo que más le atrae de ellos. Intelectual, valora la superación del intelectualismo entre las nuevas generaciones y el hecho de que en los países del nuevo orden definitivamente el culto a la razón haya quedado atrás. Cree, quiere creer, que se ha operado un salto que reconcilia Europa con su pasado medieval.
Así es cómo Drieu ve las cosas y así las explica a través de este libro cuyo último capítulo se escribió en
junio de 1940 cuando las Tercera República, a la que califica como masónica y judaica, por excelencia, se acababa de hundir, después de haber prometido apoyar a Polonia y garantizar a los militares polacos que tendrían el camino abierto hacia Berlín en apenas 15 días. Sin embargo, tras declarar la guerra al Tercer Reich, el ejército francés y el cuerpo expedicionario británico, optaron por atrincherarse tras la línea Maginot en donde permanecieron hasta que los alemanes rompieron el frente. Drieu niega que fuera la derrota de Francia, fue, nos dice, la victoria del Nuevo Orden Europeo. Menciona a España también entre los países que se habían sumado al proyecto. Consideraba inevitable, históricamente, la derrota de Francia que, para él era una especie de electroshock que le obligaría a rectificar la decadencia que había emprendido en el siglo XVII con el racionalismo, y acrecentado con el iluminismo posterior.
