Prólogo del editor
La presente edición se ha realizado a partir de la primera traducción realizada en castellano por la revista Acción Española (cuyo logotipo figuraba incluso en las ediciones siguientes). Se han modificado solamente algunas expresiones, hoy caÃdas en desuso y se han añadido algunas notas que nos han parecido necesarias para la mejor comprensión del texto. Estas notas aclaran, sobre todo, los principales rasgos de algunos personajes históricos mencionados en el texto que son poco conocidos, o incluso, completamente desconocidos para el público español del siglo XXI y cuya actuación no puede deducirse de lo escrito en el texto.
En 1989, cuando se cumplÃa el 200 aniversario del asalto a la Bastilla, el gobierno republicano francés quiso convertir aquella fecha en un acto de exaltación y reafirmación de los valores democráticos. Algunos, ya en aquel momento, nos preguntamos Qué celebración para una masacre?. Los actos quedaron, en general, muy deslucidos y el entonces presi- dente de la república, François Mitterand, no obtuvo todo el crédito que esperaba. Se supo, además, que enviados del gobierno habÃan visitado a profesores y catedráticos de los que se sabÃa que estaban trabajando en investigaciones que se consideraban contrarias a la versión oficial sobre la Revolución. Se les instó a que no publicaran sus conclusiones a cambio de recibir puestos de prestigio (y poco trabajo) en el ministerio de educación, incluso de sobornos en efectivo. En un caso la casa de un historiador que preparaba el doctorado fue saqueada y el texto elaborado robado poco antes de su exposición (Reynald Secher que preparaba su tesis sobre la insurrección de La Vandea).
El ciclo que se inició con el Juramento del Juego de Pelota y que llevó a los sucesivos episodios que Pierre Gaxotte trata en esta obra de manera magistral, ha terminado no hace mucho. La Revolución Francesa es, no solamente cosa del pasado, sino que hoy ya puede hablarse de manera completamente libre y esto implica hacerlo de manera crÃtica. De hecho, todo el perÃodo que abarca entre aquellos siniestros años hasta hace apenas cinco años, ha estado marcada por el lema que se hizo célebre entonces: Libertad, igualdad, fraternidadAlso from
