Toàn bộ kinh Đại Bát Niết-bàn dày hơn 4.500 trang, riêng phần Việt dịch chiếm gần 1.700 trang; mỗi đoạn mỗi câu trong đó đều hàm chứa những ý tứ sâu xa huyền diệu không dễ gì hiểu thấu qua một vài lần đọc. Vì thế, có thể nói đây là một nội dung giáo pháp vô cùng đồ sộ đối với bất cứ ai; cho dù là những người đã từng dày công nghiên cứu học hỏi về kinh điển cũng không khỏi gặp phải ít nhiều khó khăn khi đọc kinh này, đừng nói chi đến các Phật tử thông thường chỉ mới tiếp xúc với phần giáo pháp ở bậc sơ cơ.
Trong suốt quá trình phiên dịch kinh này, chúng tôi luôn tâm niệm điều đó. Trải qua những khó khăn của chính bản thân mình khi phải cố gắng rất nhiều để đọc hiểu và chuyển dịch kinh văn, chúng tôi có thể cảm thông sâu sắc với những khó khăn nhất định mà người đọc kinh chắc chắn sẽ gặp phải. Vì thế, chúng tôi đã không ngại tài sơ trí thiển, cố gắng suy nghĩ tìm mọi cách để giảm nhẹ sự khó khăn và giúp người đọc có thể tiếp cận với kinh văn một cách dễ dàng hơn.
Phần lớn những thuật ngữ xuất hiện trong kinh đều đã được chúng tôi chú giải theo cách dễ hiểu nhất. Để làm được điều này, đôi khi chúng tôi phải đọc qua rất nhiều trang tư liệu liên quan đến chỉ một thuật ngữ nào đó, rồi cố gắng chắt lọc, cô đúc những thông tin có được thành một cách giải thích ngắn gọn và rõ ràng nhất, sao cho những người đọc kinh dù không có sẵn nhiều kiến thức Phật học cũng có thể hiểu được ở một mức độ tương đối.
